LYDIA NTHENYA Age: 12Lydia was born on March 7, 1995 and lives in a one room mud shack with her HIV positive mother and brother, Nicodemus who is also an HHFL charge. Lydia’s mother is very weak and can no longer work to provide for her family. The father is absent. Lydia is currently in Grade 5 at Ngong Forest Primary School and loves to read books. She is very inquisitive and intelligent. |

BENSON MUIGAI Age: 17Benson is a victim of the political upheaval in Kenya in early 2009. Benson’s mother abandoned him when he was young and he was living with his grandmother in the Rift Valley Province. He was rescued by Mary, our hostel mother in 2008 at the Tambo police station where he fled after his grandmother’s murder. His home was also burned during the upheaval. He was in great danger himself due to tribal clashes. His two cousins, Samuel and Mary, were also rescued by HHFL and they all currently live in the hostel. |

JAMES OKEMBA Age: 12James is another victim of the tribal clashes in Kenya in early 2009. His parents abandoned him in 2003 and he was living with his grandmother in the Rift Valley Province, who was killed during the upheaval. He was rescued by our hostel mother with his cousins, Benson and Mary. Upon arrival to the project, James was traumatized and needed counseling. He is in Grade 5 at Ngng Forest Primary School and is an eager acrobat. |

SHARON AKINYA Age: 13Sharon was born on October 11, 1996. She is a vulnerable girl whose parents are unemployed and ill. She was initially accepted into HHFL as an orphan but we recently found out that she, in fact, has parents. Her parents resorted to this desperate and deceptive measure in order to give their daughter a chance in life – they knew she had great potential and they were right. Sharon is a bright girl who is showing leadership qualities and was recently named the scout leader for her primary school. |

EMMA MBITHE Age: 11Emma was born on February 26, 1997. Her mother became infected by her husband who later blamed her for the infection and abandoned the family. Emma’s younger bother is HIV+ but Emma is not. Emma is an intelligent child who loves art & crafts , dancing and drama but suffers from lack of discipline. Her grandmother volunteers at the Fund to ensure that Emma takes advantage of the opportunities made available to her. |

KENNEDY OTIENO Age: 19Kennedy was born March 1990 and is the eldest child of five siblings. Their father was a factory worker and the mother a seamstress. Both parents recently died of AIDS leaving his family destitute. All five orphans are presently in the care of the Fund and live in the HHF hostel. Kennedy just graduated from high school and will be joining the HHFL office as a trainee for his gap year. |

FRANCIS KAIRU Age: 15Francis was born on September 30, 1994. Both parents died of AIDS in 2004 leaving behind four children. Francis lives with his two older sisters who do their best to care for Francis and his younger bother. Francis is in Grade 7 and attends St. Nicholas Primary School. He is an average student who loves to read and participate in all activities, especially soccer. He is a Scout and excels at drama. |

VIENDA LUNGANYI Age: 9Vienda is a vulnerable orphan whose parents died in 2003 of unknown causes. We are assuming they died of AIDS. Vienda is currently in the care of her step sister and the husband who is a casual labourer and earns a minimal income. When Vienda arrived to HHFL, she was extremely malnourished and suffered from stunted growth. We thought she was mentally challenged at first but good nutrition has doubled her weight and improved her mental capacities. She is enrolled in the Tiny Tots Preschool program and excels in numbers and drama. |

STEPHEN MUASYA Age: 13Stephen’s parents recently died of AIDS. He was left in the care of an abusive uncle and did not attend school for months. He also often went hungry. In January 2009, Stephen found his way to HHFL. Stephen lives in the hostel and his health has greatly improved. He is currently attending primary school. Stephen is a very quiet and introverted boy who loves to read. Our art classes are helping to express his emotions and open his heart. |
